Rattlers get off to impressive start versus Seminoles

The Rattler men got finally got the 2010-2011 season started against Florida State. The Seminoles won the meet 122-43, but there were a few bright spots for the men.

Here are some of the highlights from the meet:

Freshman Joel Sankar  got a stellar start to his collegiate career. Sankar, the lone winner for the Rattlers on the day, posted a time of 2:03.95 in the final individual event of the day, the 200 yard individual medley. His swim also earned a spot in the university history books, ranking him fourth overall in the men's top ten best times. He also had a strong swim in the men's 100 yard breaststroke.

Freshman Nik Rodgers represented the Rattlers very well in the sprint events. He picked up two third place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (:23.66) and the 100 yard freestyle (:53.98)

Jeremy Latimore earned a thrid place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:32.72 to begin his college career.

Senior Akie Smythe began his season right where he left off last year at the CCSA Championships. He posted a time of 1:05.41 in the 100 yard backstroke which is a four tenths faster than his time at the conference championships last year in Tennessee.

Rattler women improve versus Florida gulf Coast

The Lady Rattlers showed solid improvement last Friday in the dual meet versus Florida Gulf Coast University. The Eagles won the meet 83-55, at Florida State’s Morcom Aquatic Center.

Every single swimmer posted improved times in their events. Team highlights from the meet:
Sophomore Alexandria Age and Freshman Reina Pate posted season best times in the women's 50 yard freestyle (:25.95 and :26.78, respectively). Age also got her name etched in the history books with the swim ranking her ninth on the top ten list
The Junior trio also got in on the action:
Kelle' Wyatt  dropped a second in her 200 freestyle(2:51.96). She then came back at the end of the meet  and shaved off four tenths of a second in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.14).
Jasmine Leslie dropped eight seconds in the 200 freestyle (3:10.78) and set a season best in the 100 yard freestyle (1:25.62).
Bria Bennett continued to show improvement in the 100 yard butterfly, setting a season and lifetime best time of 1:10.95. She also moved up to fourth all time on the Top Ten Best Times.

Ospreys outlast the Lady Rattlers in season opener

10/9/10- The Florida A&M University Lady Rattlers Swimming team opened up the 2010-2011 season on the road at Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association conference foe the University of North Florida. The Ospreys won the meet 51-21.

Team highlights from the meet:
Freshman Reina Pate made her debut for the Rattlers in the women's 100 butterfly. Her third place time of 1:11.16 earned her a spot in Rattler Swimming history. She now owns the fifth fastest time ever in that event at Florida A&M.
Sophomore Alexandria Age had the best finish of the day in the women's 100 yard backstroke (1:05.84).

The trio of juniors for the ladies posted great swims in the first meet of the year.
Jasmine Leslie and Kelle' Wyatt got things started with their swims in the 200 yard freestyle.
Leslie then came back the next event and swam a personal best in the 50 yard freestyle. (:27.65)
Bria Bennett nabbed a fourth place finish with a personal best time in the women's 100 yard butterfly.
The lady Rattlers despite the loss showed much improvement from last season. They look to keep that ball rolling when they host the CCSA conference champion Florida Gulf Coast University.

FAU Quad Meet

Boca Raton, FL - The Rattlers hit the road heading to Boca Raton, FL on Friday January 22nd. They took on Florida Atlantic, Indian River and the University of Miami (FL) at Florida Atlantic Aquatics Center. The Rattlers gained some valuable experience competing in the 16 event meet format, and responded well to swimming some off events.
the Rattlers will be off from intercollegiate competition but will be in the pool with the FAMU Spring Time Trials Meet on January 30th, 2010 at the Morcom Aquatics Center at 3:00pm.

FAMU versus Darton College

Tallahassee, FL - On Martin Luther King Jr Holiday, the Rattlers hosted Darton College. The Cavaliers outpaced the Rattlers, with the women losing 32-137 and the men losing 18-149.
Freshman Alexandra Age had the lone win on the day for the Lady Rattlers in the women’s 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:06.70. She almost picked up two wins for the day as she was just out touched earlier in the meet in the women's 200 yard I.M. (2:27.79). Senior Yolanda Baylor posted a season best time in the 50 yard freestyle (:28.19) for fourth place.
The men's team also posted some great performances against the Cavaliers. Freshman Alphonso Byrd notched a season best time in the men's 50-yard freestyle(:23.56) for fifth place.
The Rattlers will be back in action on Friday January 22nd, 2010 heading down to Boaca Raton, FL to take on Indian River Sate College, the University of Miami (FL) and Florida Atlantic University at 4:00pm.

On the second day of second of school for the spring semester the Florida A&M Rattlers hosted the College of Charleston Cougars on Thursday January 7th, 2010.

Florida A&M at St. Leo University

St. Leo, FL - In the last leg of their central Florida trip, the Florida A&M Rattlers visited the St. Leo University Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Univeristy Pool. The Lion men and women both won 94-32. Despite the loss, the Rattlers continued to improve times in the pool.
On the women's side, the relay team of Yolanda Baylor, Alexandra Age, Bria Bennett, and Jasmine Leslie posted a team season best time of 5:18.66 in the women's 400-yard Medley Relay.
Each of the Lady Ratlers also continued to swim personal best times at the University Pool. In the Women's 400-yard individual medley, freshman Alexandra Age shaved three seconds off her lifetime best time. Her time of 5:21.35 also earned her third place.
Fueled by the Age's individual medley (I.M.) swim, sophomore Bria Bennett kept things moving by dropping over eleven seconds in the women's 200-yard butterfly. Her time of 2:54.88 earned her fifth place in the race and has also moved her up to fourth in the Top 10 performances in that event.
Senior Yolanda Baylor continued her ironwoman performance for the Lady Rattlers, swimming both of the sprint events back to back for the second day in a row. She finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle(:28.46) and third in the 100-yard freestyle(1:04.27). Both times are season bests for the senior Mitchellville, MD native.
Sophomore Jasmine Leslie rounded out the individual accomplishments with her continued improvements in the women's 500-yard freestyle. Leslie finished third with a new lifetime best of 8:39.83.

The men's team also posted some great performances against the Lions. Freshman Alphonso Byrd-Davis notched two top three finishes for the day. He grabbed second place in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of :24.50, and then posted a season best time of :55.38 in the men's 100-yard freestyle for third place.
Freshman Nijyl Chavis rounded out the afternoon with his performance in the men's 200-yard breaststroke. The Social Cirlce, GA native swam a season best time of 2:36.80, which was good enough for fourth place for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will be back in action early in 2010, as they host the College of Charleston Cougars on January 7th, 2010 at 3:00pm. The College of Charleston Men's Swimming team is the 2x and defending Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Conference Champions.

Spartans outlast Rattlers

Tampa, FL - In the first leg of their central Florida trip, the Florida A&M Rattlers visited Division 2 powerhouse University at Tampa Spartans on Friday afternoon at the McNiff Fitness Center Pool. The Spartan men won 124-54, while the women posted a 111-57 victory.
On the women's side, the relay team of Yolanda Baylor, Alexandra Age, Bria Bennett, and Jasmine Leslie posted a team season best time of 2:17.94 in the women's 200-yard Medley Relay.
Each of the Lady Ratlers continued to swim personal best times at the McNiff Fitness Center Pool. Freshman Alexandra Age started the day with a fourth place finish in the women's 50-yard backstroke. She posted a lifetime best time of :30.90.
Sophomore Bria Bennett kept things moving by dropping over a second in the women's 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:13.63 earned her fifth place.
Senior Yolanda Baylor really step up for the Lady Rattlers swimming both of the sprint events back to back. She finished fifth place in both the 50-yard freestyle(:28.69) and the 100-yard freestyle(1:04.89). Both time are season bests for the senior Mitchellville, MD native.
Sophomore Jasmine Leslie rounded out the individual accomplishments with her continued improvements in the women's 500 yard freestyle. Leslie finished third with a new lifetime best of 8:42.20.
The men's team also had some best times swum against the Spartans. Junior Akie Smythe got things started for the Rattlers with a fourth place finish in the men's 50-yard backstroke. His time of :30.99 is a lifetime best for the Miami, FL native.
Freshman Devon Moses also had some great swims for his rookie campaign. The Pensacola, FL native shaved off two one-hundredths in his fourth place finish in the men's 100-yard butterfly at a time of 1:06.14. He rounded out the day with a lifetime best time in the men's 50-yard butterfly with a time of :28.38.
The Rattler will finish their central Florida trip with a dual meet at St. Leo University on Saturday afternoon.

Rattlers outpaced by Seminoles

On the eve of the FAMU Homecoming Football Game against Norfolk State the next day, the men's and women's swimming teams competed against the Florida State Seminoles on friday afternoon at Morcom Aquatics Center. The Seminoles men's team won 79 to 58 and the women by a score of 76 to 47.
Freshman Alexandra Age continued her outstanding freshman season against the Seminoles. After splitting a personal best of :30.50 on the Women's 200 yard Medley Relay team, she continued to shave time off by dropping a second in the 200 IM. She rounded out her day with a fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Her time of :57.24 ties her for the seventh spot on the Women's Top Ten in that event.
Sophomore Jasmine Leslie had the largest time drop of the day in the 500 yard freestyle. She dropped six seconds off her best time in the event for a fifth place finish.
The Rattler Men were led by Freshman Alphonso Byrd. The Ft. Lauderdale native posted season best times in both of his events. He started out with a sixth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle posting a time of :23.89, which is a half second faster than his previous time this season. Then he finished seventh in the 100 yard freestyle, bettering his time to :55:51.

The Rattler swim teams will finish out the fall semester with a central Florida road trip for two dual meets. First, they will take on Division 2 powerhouse University of Tampa on Friday November 13 at 3:30pm and then head over to St. Leo University on Saturday at 2pm for the final competition of the semester.

Lady Rattlers fall to Gardner-Webb and Campbell

Despite losing to Gardner-Webb 21-165 and Campbell 21-166, the Lady Rattlers all posted Top 10 times in their events again for the second straight week. Freshman Alexandra Age grabbed some new rankings. She finished fourth in the 400 individual medley in a time of 5:24.97, that ranks her second in the Women's Top Ten in that event. She then moved into the fourth spot with her eighth place finish in the in 200 yard backstroke (2:26.09). Also making top ten times includes sophomore’s Bria Bennett in the 200 butterfly (8th Kelle’ Wyatt in the 200 breaststroke (10th) , and Jasmine Leslie in the 500 freestyle (9th). Leslie also shaved off over a second from her personal best last season. Senior Yolanda Baylor rounded out the performances moving up to 9th in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:45.42.
On the men’s side, Gardner-Webb defeated the Rattlers by a score of 35-94. Freshman Nijyl Chavis lead the way with his 4th place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:37.23, which ranks him 9th in the men’s top 10 university times in that event.
The Women and Men will be back in action Homecoming week against Florida State at 3pm at the Morcom Aquatics Center.

Lady Ospreys fly past Lady Rattlers

The Lady Rattlers swimming team opened up the 2009-10 season against Coastal Collegiate Swimming Assocation (CCSA) conference opponent University of North Florida on Saturday, October 10th at the Morcom Aquatics Center in Innovation Park. The Lady Rattlers were outscored 25-151 by the Lady Ospreys.



Leading the way for the Lady Rattlers (0-1, 0-1) was Freshman Alexandra Age. The Louisana native started the day by leading off the 200 yard Medley Relay team with a 50 yard backstroke split of :31.23. Then in her first collegiate individual event, Age finished fourth in 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:24.02.
Her time in that event ranks her fifth all-time in the FAMU Women's Swimming Top Ten. She rounded out the afternoon with a third palce finish in the 100 yard backstoke. Her time of 1:07.01 also made the All time Top Ten ranks at fourth.

During her first collegiate event, Sophomore Bria Bennett also broke into the Women's Top 10 with her fourth place finish in the Women’s 100 yard butterfly.

Her time of 1:13.51 ranks her sixth overall. She started the day providing the buttefly leg of the 200 medley relay then turning in a fifth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle in a time of :28.07.

Next up for the Rattlers will be a trip to the corbett SPorts Complex in Greensboro, NC to compete in the HBCU relay meet on October 16th, 2009 on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University and then a tri meet versuses CCSA opponents Garnder-Webb University and Campbell University on October 17th, 2009 in Boiling Springs, Nc no the campus of Garnder-Webb University.

2009 Orange and Green Meet Recap

The 2009-2010 FAMU Swimming team held the annual Orange and Green Meet at the Morcom Aquatics Center in Innovation Park on October 3rd, 2009. This year's meet was the tune up competition for the Rattlers when they will open their 2009-2010 Season as hosts to the University of North Florida Ospreys on October 10th.

The sprinters look to be the strength for the Rattlers this year. On the women's team, Senior Yolanda Baylor lead the way in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle while Freshman Alexandra Age negative split her 100 yard backstroke for a personal best time.

The men's team had some great rivalries in a several events. Freshman Alphonso Byrd and Senior Jack Dash finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle while Junior Akie Smythe out touched Freshman Nijyl Chavis in the 100 yard freestyle. In the final individual event, Chavis out touches Dash in the 100 yard breaststroke.
