Spartans outlast Rattlers


Tampa, FL - In the first leg of their central Florida trip, the Florida A&M Rattlers visited Division 2 powerhouse University at Tampa Spartans on Friday afternoon at the McNiff Fitness Center Pool. The Spartan men won 124-54, while the women posted a 111-57 victory.
On the women's side, the relay team of Yolanda Baylor, Alexandra Age, Bria Bennett, and Jasmine Leslie posted a team season best time of 2:17.94 in the women's 200-yard Medley Relay.
Each of the Lady Ratlers continued to swim personal best times at the McNiff Fitness Center Pool. Freshman Alexandra Age started the day with a fourth place finish in the women's 50-yard backstroke. She posted a lifetime best time of :30.90.
Sophomore Bria Bennett kept things moving by dropping over a second in the women's 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:13.63 earned her fifth place.
Senior Yolanda Baylor really step up for the Lady Rattlers swimming both of the sprint events back to back. She finished fifth place in both the 50-yard freestyle(:28.69) and the 100-yard freestyle(1:04.89). Both time are season bests for the senior Mitchellville, MD native.
Sophomore Jasmine Leslie rounded out the individual accomplishments with her continued improvements in the women's 500 yard freestyle. Leslie finished third with a new lifetime best of 8:42.20.
The men's team also had some best times swum against the Spartans. Junior Akie Smythe got things started for the Rattlers with a fourth place finish in the men's 50-yard backstroke. His time of :30.99 is a lifetime best for the Miami, FL native.
Freshman Devon Moses also had some great swims for his rookie campaign. The Pensacola, FL native shaved off two one-hundredths in his fourth place finish in the men's 100-yard butterfly at a time of 1:06.14. He rounded out the day with a lifetime best time in the men's 50-yard butterfly with a time of :28.38.
The Rattler will finish their central Florida trip with a dual meet at St. Leo University on Saturday afternoon.
